Heck Of A Week

Posted by Doz on Sep 20, 2009 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog, Work

I went to take my pre-employment physical on Tuesday of this week. I had to fill out forms about all the meds I was on and any medical conditions I had. I put down that I was diabetic and was off my meds. They tested my blood sugar and I was at 425. With my blood sugar being that high they wouldn’t finish with the rest of the physical and would not approve me because part of the job I had been offered required me to drive. They won’t pass you if your Blood Sugar is above 300.

So with my possible job in jeopardy I called TARC to see what needed to be done.  They told me to go see my Dr. and they would work with me. The reason I hadn’t been on my meds or seen a Dr. was because of no insurance. Luckily I had enough money to go see the Dr. and get some test strips. My Doc is a great guy and is always willing to help me out. He gave me 3 sample pens for Levemir insulin.

So I went back on Friday and got my physical. Blood sugar was 295 and I passed everything else. Went home and called TARC and let them know.

Tomorrow (Monday) my seven months of unemployment ends as I return to work at TARC. I’m excited to be going back to work and I am excited about the possibilities that my new job is going to offer me.

Have to go to bed early so I can be bright-eyed for w0rk!

A Sad Story (or The One In Which I Feel Sorry For Myself

Posted by Doz on Mar 11, 2009 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog, Work

Been a month since I was let go from my job. I’ve looked through listings online for my area but there is nothing out there that I’m qualified for or would fit what I need. I’ve gone through not working for 5-6 months a lot in the last six years. The thing that is different this time is that I was fired from my job not laid off with a high certainty of call back. With the economy the way it is this is REALLY not going to be an easy search.

My last two jobs have been sitting in front of a PC doing whatever the job required, neither required any special skills. This has been a good thing as I have none. I can Google with the best of them. You want me to post on twitter I can do that too. I can also scroll through things and check little boxes, I’m real good at that!

I’m in debt with no way out. My debt right now is $26,000. The majority of my debt is in the form of student loans from training that didn’t work out. By Work out I mean I finished both the training from both places but was unable to get jobs. Neither place would help with job placement. I can’t go through bankruptcy because you can’t disperse student loans through bankruptcy. If I was a major corporation I could ask the federal government for a bailout and get one.

I can’t take place in the tech revolution because I can’t afford any of the gadgets, but that isn’t the worst thing right now. Sure it sucks but the bad thing is I’m a diabetic with no health insurance.

For most of the last two years my diabetes meds have been free. I was part of a clinical study and got them free through that. Then as a thank you from the company running the study I got a years worth of free meds, strips and syringes. As of right now I am on the last week of my Actos prescription. I still have a four month supply of Metformin which is the cheapest of my drugs. I’m also on the last bottle of Lantus which is insulin I’m supposed to take once a day. I’ve been skipping one or two days between doses to make it last longer.

Metformin is $4.00 for a 30 day supply. Lantus is $90-$100 for a bottle which is almost a 30 day supply.  A 30 day Actos supply is around $250. My Doctor won’t do any re-fills without an appointment for a check up, But I might be able to do something about that if I can let them know I’m unemployed and have no insurance.

So right now things are tighter than usual but I’m sure that I’ll make it through somehow. Just wish I find a work at home job.

Ah well I’ve gone on for to long and there is a game of bubble spinner waiting for me. So I guess that’s all for tonight. Thanks for reading. Sorry for unloading all this on ya.

Later.

I Am Dying

Posted by Doz on Sep 21, 2008 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog

It’s true, the thing is I’m doing it to myself.

I lead an extremely sedentary life style and guess what I’m overweight. I have always been overweight but right now I ‘m pretty much the heaviest I’ve ever been. I’m not sure of my exact weight, but I’m pretty sure I have gained twenty maybe thirty pounds since April. This puts me at somewhere around 370-375 pounds.  This is having a negative impact on all areas of my life and it’s time to make a change. Oh yeah I’m also diabetic.

Last week I started walking during my lunch time at work. I also am going to go for a quick walk in the  morning before I shower before work.  There needs to be a quick walk in the evening also. Also the snacking is going to be diminished until it is virtually non-existant.

I put this here so that people know about it and will help me stay on track with what needs to be done.

Thanks for reading.

Free Drugs

Posted by Doz on Apr 7, 2008 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog

Today was the last appointment for the insulin clinical trial I was in. It was cut short. I was worried about what I was going to do about my meds until I got a doctors appointment. Turns out I didn’t need to worry. As a thank you for being part of the trial Eli Lilly is covering my two oral diabetic meds, insulin, strips, syringes, lancets until December 31st.

THANK YOU!!!!

There may be a chance for me to be a part of another study in a month or so.

Plus I lost 12 pounds since my last visit.

Light at the End of the Tunnel?

Posted by Doz on Aug 24, 2007 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog

I’m almost done with my studies for becoming a medical coder. Only have about a week and a half left and then I take my certification. Still not that confident about passing the certification test or about getting a job but my support network seems to think I’ll do fine and that I’m just goon babbling. We’ll see…

My diabetes seems to be somewhat in control as the insulin doses seem to be helping greatly. I still have to be careful what I eat because my blood sugar spikes if I eat the wrong things but sometimes ya just gotta say what the hell! They hover around the 100-120 most of the time. I’ve even had a couple scary lows one of 78 and one of 72. I wasn’t going into shock but I was trembling excessively.

Need to get out more, but that will have to wait until I get a full-time position and can afford it. I also need to buy some more cool gadgets but alas that will also have to wait for the job and catching up on bills and such.

I’m thinking about breaking up with some of my favorite podcasts but I’m going to give them a little more time to see if we can work through this hard time. I’ve left others that I’ve listened to for long times so it’s nothing new, it just kinda sucks.

People around here have no fucking idea how to drive!

I need to Work on My Golf Swing

Posted by Doz on Jul 20, 2007 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog

Went out to an early dinner with Sparky and Pam.We had happy hour appetizers at a sports bar which were pretty good. After dinner we went back to there house and played golf on the Wii for about 3 hours. I don’t swing the Wii remote in the normal way and I guess I should because when I woke up this morning my right arm was hurting more than normal. Still hurting more than normal right now also.

I hit a new low just a little while ago. My blood sugar was 83. I haven’t been this low in who knows how long. Feeling really shaky right now so I had some peanut butter crackers to raise me up some.

Going to get the new and last Harry Potter book tonight. Then I’m going to have to stay off a lot of the internet because of all the asses that like to post spoilers. Hate those fuckers!

Diabetes

Posted by Doz on Jun 11, 2007 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog

I believe that it was sometime in 1999 that I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. For awhile I tried to watch what I ate and take my meds. A change in employment and change in insurance coverage put an end to that. I quit trying to eat right and had no medication.

Flash forward to this year. I checked my blood sugar with my mom’s meter one night and my blood sugar was 500.I finally decided to try to get my diabetes under control. I was having some trouble with my feet. They burn and tingle and are hypersensitive. Because my blood sugar had gone unchecked and uncontrolled for so long I had developed neuropathy in my feet. I was drinking at least three 32 ounce cups of water a day because I was thirsty all the time.

Tuesday Was SOOO Not Fun

Posted by Doz on Apr 18, 2007 in Diabetes, Doz's Blog

Went to the doctor today to get my second training session on how to give myself an injection and to see if they could do something about the pain in my shoulder. I was there for three hours! Most of that was spent in the exam room waiting to get a shot in my shoulder.

The guy I see is an advanced registered nurse practitioner so he wanted the Dr. to come in and make sure he was giving the shot in the right place. Problem was they both had patients other than me and could not seem to get free at the same time. My doctor kept apologizing for the wait which was nice of him, but I was going stir crazy after awhile. Well they were finally able to break free for a moment and decide on where the shot should be executed. Thing is I don’t think it did any good because my shoulder still hurts.

The nurse who was supposed to teach me about drawing my injection and then how to do it screwed up and drew it before she came into the room. She apologized and said that if I needed to that when my insurance ran out I could come in a she would still help me do it for free. I did give myself the injection with that damned FOOT LONG NEEDLE (OK only an inch and a half long but it looks bigger than that!) I did well on that.

Too bad my insurance runs out at the end of the month because one of the meds I got filled today is $215 for a 30 day supply without insurance. With insurance it’s $50. Sure hope that guy calls back about the study so can get this stuff for free.

Oh well bored ya all enough with my health issues I’m off to bed and gonna wake up bright-eyed and ready to study!

* Oh forgot to mention that I had only eaten breakfast and a light snack before I went to the appointment  which was at 1 PM. First time my blood sugar has been below 200,but not the best way to get it there .
